Innovators and Innovations

Two portfolios dedicated to improving health care through nursing

The Rita & Alex Hillman Foundation has made grants to schools of nursing in New York and Philadelphia since 1989. Through our Hillman Scholars programs, we have sought to address staffing shortages and direct talented students to training and clinical opportunities in the New York metropolitan area. More than 1,500 Hillman Scholar alumni have participated in the program, providing needed bedside talent and leadership in a variety of health care settings.

Today, the health care system is under tremendous quality, cost and regulatory pressures, leading to dramatic changes in how health care providers, including nurses, think about, organize and conduct the critically important work of patient care.

In response to this dynamic environment,  the new Hillman Scholars in Innovation program is cultivating the next generation of nurses who will lead transformation in health care across the country. Complementing this effort, the Hillman Innovation Grants program has begun funding projects focused on turning nurse-led ideas for better care into real-world results.
